12/18 – Spotlight on a Trans Elder: Jude Patton

Jude Patton was the catalyst for this series on elders at QueerDoc when he asked us why we weren’t talking more about gender care for elders.

Jude is a healer, scholar, activist, historian, and humanitarian. He started medical transition in 1971, and was one of the first transgender patients at both Johns Hopkins and Stanford.

Jude is a physician assistant, Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and an end of life doula. He is also an author and the co-editor along with Margot Wilson of the series TRANScestors Navigating LGBTQ+ Aging, Illness and End of Life Decisions, Volume I: Generations of Hope, Volume II: Generations of Change, and III: Generations of Pride and the forthcoming biography Young Kid, Old Goat: Transgender Journey to Understanding the Man Within.

Jude has served on the WPATH, Ingersoll Gender Center, and GLMA’s boards of directors. He volunteers with SAGE, Transgender Lifeline, and with multiple medical organizations focused on LGBTQ+ individuals. He continues to practice as a therapist. In 2022 he received the WPATH Harry Benjamin Lifetime Distinguished Service Award.
