We are so thrilled to welcome Courtney Rawls (they/them) to the QueerDoc team. Courtney will begin seeing patients in late October.
Introducing Courtney
Courtney is a Nurse Practitioner with Board Certifications in Family Practice, Psychiatry, and Women’s/Gender-Related Care. As a Black, Femme, Neurodiverse, Non-Binary, and Queer person Courtney understands the challenges people with marginalized identities face when accessing care within the medical system. They are deeply passionate about working with Queer people who identify as BIPOC, disabled, gender-expansive, neuro and sexually diverse.
Courtney understands the harms that white heteronormative patriarchal culture inflicts upon our society and they provide medical care from a anti-racist, social justice, and trauma-informed perspective. Courtney identifies as a “complex” person, meaning that they know how to hold space as a “professional” and also consider themselves “real extra” too. They love the dynamic of both/and rather than either/or (“Ain’t nobody got time for binary thinking!”).
Courtney currently resides in North Carolina. They enjoy cooking, eating in bed, joyful movement, hiking, reading, and getting into trouble.
Courtney looks forward to connecting with you!
Courtney is able to see adult patients in:
- Alaska
- California
- Idaho
- Oregon
- Utah
- Washington
- Wyoming
As a nurse practitioner with board certification in Psychiatry, Courtney is qualified to write mental health support letters for gender affirming surgery in the states that they practice. We expect to expand our services to include mental health support letters in 2025.
What Do Nurse Practitioners Do?
Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) are able to see patients, diagnose, prescribe, and coordinate treatment. NPs have obtained graduate-level education and passed national certification boards to be able to practice. Nurse Practitioners cannot perform surgical procedures. 22 states allow APRNs to diagnose and treat patients independently without a relationship with a doctor, however 38 states require physician oversight to prescribe medications. The majority of states require that APRNs have a professional relationship with a physician, which may or may not require that doctors review and sign off on treatment plans (for more information see this scope of practice FAQ.) Courtney’s sig line includes the following certifications: APRN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, WHNP-BC. What do they mean?
- APRN: Advance Practice Registered Nurse
- FNP-C: Family Nurse Practitioner-Certified
- Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner-Board Certified
- Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner-Board Certified
