Gender Affirming Medical Care Includes

  • hormones — #testosterone, #estradiol, #progesterone
  • hormone blockers — #bicalutamide, #spironolactone, #finasteride, #raloxifene (SERMS)
  • puberty blockers — #leuprolide

After an initial consult where the provider helps clarify the goals of gender affirming therapy, QueerDoc will provide labs and prescriptions based on your individual goals. We provide care informed by national standards of care from WPATHUCSF, and the Endocrine Society and based on our clinical experience. We implement evidence-based medicine when possible while recognizing its limits in our field. We like to call our model of care evidence-informed. We follow an informed consent model.

Follow-up consists of:

  • lab monitoring
  • secure messaging
  • virtual visits

In the first year, a typical follow-up schedule consist of visits and labs every 3 months.

Hormone therapy is NOT limited to patients with a binary gender presentation, and mental health letters are not usually necessary. For more about specific therapies you can review them in the Before Your Visit section.

We also understand that the cost of gender affirming medical care can be prohibitive. We are piloting a group visit option, which allows us to offer lower-cost care. Group visits are best for individuals seeking a streamlined, more binary transition. We will not be able to provide direct messaging with providers, or more nuanced care options like SERMs and bicalutamide to group visit patients, as they require more time and follow-up.

Group Visits:  flat fee, shorter visits, SERMs and bicalutamide are not available.

Individualized care: sliding scale, longer visits, SERMs and bicalutamide are available, as well as secure, direct messaging with your provider.

For more information about Group Visits, please read our blog announcement.

Adolescents and families often have even more need for support from their primary care providers, mental health providers, and sometimes attorneys when receiving gender affirming care. QueerDoc helps these patients and families work with other providers to achieve the patient’s gender-related health goals. Please review the above links and the Adolescent Gender Care page for more information.

If you need to access gender affirming medical care but are not in a region that legally allows care, consider contacting Elevated Access, who flies folx to get care for free.
